CE Community Engagement
The CTSI Community Engagement (CE) Program provides consultation, training, and other resources to develop and support community-university research partnerships, community input into university research, and dissemination of evidence-based programs into community settings. The CEP builds the capacity of UCSF, local community organizations, and clinical settings to conduct collaborative research.

Are you a researcher who wants to work with community partners? Do you work in a clinic or community organization and want to connect with a UCSF investigator to do research or find out about research findings?
The Community Engagement Program provides navigation and consultation for researchers and community members, facilitating research partnerships and relationships between UCSF and the community that will result in:
-
more health sciences research in community settings that is responsive and relevant to the health needs of the community,
-
more opportunities for community members to participate in health sciences research at all levels, and
-
more opportunities to implement important clinical findings in diverse community settings where patients get their healthcare.

Do you want to learn more about community-engaged research?
The Community Engagement Program provides training and resources to researchers and community members so you can create and sustain partnerships that can result in research that better translates into practice.
Check out our training guides and resource library
Our Guides to Collaborative Research contain clear, in-depth information for investigators, community clinicians, and community agencies interested in creating, maintaining, and making the most of research partnerships. Read our guides to learn the compelling rationales for partnership, how to build an effective partnership, common issues that facilitate and challenge collaborative work, and the benefits of effective research dissemination into the community.
Examples of how the Community Engagement Program works:
- You want to work with a UCSF researcher or community partner, but don’t know where to start. We can refer you to our Guides to Collaborative Research to help orient you.
- You are writing a proposal to test the efficacy of delivering a new treatment to reduce the incidence of childhood dental caries in community settings. We can help you think through your research design; identify budget implications of community-engaged methods; create community advisory boards; and connect with community partners who can provide letters of support, and develop realistic methods and incentives for patient and clinician participation.
- You are a school health nurse and want more information about current research on adolescent health. We can provide speakers for in-services and facilitate discussions between your staff and researchers about potential partnerships.
- Your medical practice treats a large population of Asian American patients who are carriers of hepatitis B, and you would like to initiate or collaborate on a research study of new treatments and innovative approaches to working with this population. We can help you identify researchers with similar or complementary interests.
- You work for a community coalition that aims to reduce violence in your neighborhood and want to see if your programs are effective. We can help you think though an evaluation plan or review your current evaluation efforts.
- You’re interested in working with the diverse patient population at Kaiser. We can help you link with the Kaiser Division of Research to find a co-PI and explore a collaborative research project.
