The CRCs provide the clinical and translational research infrastructure for UCSF investigators who wish to study pathogenesis and treatment spanning the spectrum of human disease. Investigators seeking to conduct research within any of the CRC sites must have their protocol approved by one of three standing CRC Advisory Committees. A common application form has been developed for simultaneous submission to the UCSF Committee on Human Research which will conduct a parallel and separate review process.

As the safety net hospital for the City and County of San Francisco, SFGH delivers culturally sensitive care to an ethnically-diverse and highly vulnerable population. SFGH also has a long tradition of training outstanding clinicians and continues to be one of the principal sites in which UCSF medical students, residents and postdoctoral fellows learn to take care of the most severely ill medical and surgical patients. The SFGH CRC is located in the midst of the acute medical service and is dedicated to the conduct of clinical investigation in adult subjects recruited primarily from the vulnerable populations.
The SFGH CRC encompasses two research units – a discrete, ten-bed inpatient facility located on the 5th floor of the main hospital building and an outpatient clinic with 4 exam rooms located on the 4th floor. Both units are staffed by highly skilled research nurses. The SFGH CRC is also supported by a metabolic kitchen and has DEXA scanners and exercise physiology equipment, as well as sample processing laboratory.

The Moffitt Hospital Adult CRC consists of a combined inpatient/outpatient unit on the 12th floor of the Moffitt Hospital of the UCSF/Medical Center on the Parnassus campus. The unit was completely renovated in 2002 and provides support for investigations in subjects across a broad spectrum of diseases, particularly for those typically seen in a tertiary care referral center. Training is also a major focus of this unit: in addition to providing a site for training of K awardees, in 2005 the GCRC became the home of training grants for medical students and for students from all four UCSF schools, funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and a Roadmap T32 grant, respectively.
CRC resources include 10 inpatient beds, outpatient exam space, research nursing services, bionutrition services including a metabolic kitchen, sample processing laboratory services, DEXA scanners, and an exercise physiology laboratory.

The Kaiser Permanente Division of Research (DOR) was established in 1961 to conduct research aimed at improving methods for delivery of health care to subscribers of Kaiser Permanente Medical Care Program, Northern California Region. DOR pioneered automated multiphasic health testing systems to provide cost-effective health checkups as well as a computer-based medical record system, which resulted in the accumulation of a large volume of medical data that could be used for research purposes.
The Kaiser DOR Clinic is an outpatient clinical research unit located on Broadway Street in Oakland. The 10,000 square foot clinic includes 12 interview rooms, three examination rooms, three laboratories, a freezer room, a negative pressure processing room, rooms for DEXA and EKG, and participant changing rooms, bathrooms and showers. This unit provides nursing and infrastructure for outpatient studies.
