Resident Funding Opportunities
Resident Research Funding
Background
The Resident Clinical and Translational Research Funding program is designed to provide up to $2000 per academic year to UCSF residents for qualified clinical and translational research expenses not covered by their mentor or other sources. Applications will be accepted twice a year and the most meritorious projects will be funded. The funds may be used for qualified research expenses as defined by official UCSF policy, including materials, tuition, design and biostatistics consultation, analytic support, and travel to present the project at a research meeting. Basic science applications which do not include human subjects or use human specimens will not be accepted. Hardware and software purchases, and travel for purposes other than to present an abstract are permitted if required by the project, but are generally considered less worthy of funding than other expenditures. Salary support and entertainment are not permitted. Priority for funding will be based upon the quality of the research protocol, feasibility and the potential to advance the applicant's research career. Previous awardees may apply and residents may submit multiple proposals, but only one proposal per resident will be funded each cycle.
For the Spring 2009 round of funding, 21 research proposals were reviewed by 4 UCSF faculty, and 10 projects were awarded. The projects span a variety of disciplines and research designs and are conducted under the guidance of a research mentor. View previous awardee list

UCSF Resident Research Scholar Awards
The CTSI-sponsored Resident Research Program is pleased to announce that starting July 1 2009 we will provide full tuition, a research stipend and co-mentoring for up to two highly qualified UCSF residents who enroll in the Advanced Training in Clinical Research (ATCR), a one year training program sponsored by the Department of Epidemiology. Eligible residents must apply to and be accepted by the ATCR program by the deadline of May 15, 2010. Go to the ATCR website to learn more and access the application form. When submitting the application please note at the top of the application: RESIDENT RESEARCH SCHOLAR AWARD. The Resident Research Program will select the most qualified applicants for the Resident Research Scholar Award based on a review of the ATCR application and our assessment of the applicant's research potential, the availability of mentoring within their home department, and commitment to a year of full-time clinical research training.
The awards will include the following elements:
- tuition for ATCR
- up to $2000 for qualified research expenses, such as design/statistical consultation, books and study supplies, and travel to present an accepted abstract.
- co-mentoring by one or more of the UCSF Resident Research Program faculty to supplement the applicant primary research mentor. The co-mentoring may focus on methodologic issues, career advancement, or other relevant topics as appropriate.
Please note that the ATCR curriculum requires two days of class and section/laboratory each week on Tuesdays and Thursdays, plus another day (or more) for reading and preparing assignments. Visit the TICR website to view the schedule for the past year, which will be similar for the upcoming year. The ATCR program requires scholars to devote at least 70% of their time during the year to the program and their own clinical research projects.
Applicants will be notified their acceptance into ATCR by June 1 and recipients of the Resident Research Scholar Award will be announced by the same date. Residents admitted into the ATCR program but not awarded a Resident Research Scholar Award must seek other funding sources, such as their research mentor or home Department, for ATCR tuition.
Please contact Doug Bauer, MD, UCSF Resident Research Program Director, if you have questions.
