Hundreds of individuals from around UCSF participated in the University’s first IT Innovation Contest, which produced 48 proposals from teams that included 200 people. Proposal development was aided by 180 commenters who provided valuable support and feedback, and five winning multi-disciplinary teams were selected as winners.
The team-based contest, designed to develop quick and creative IT solutions that benefit the University, was open to all UCSF Campus faculty, staff, and students.

“We are thrilled with the interest and participation,” said Elazar Harel, chief information officer, Information Technology at UCSF. “The decisions were not easy to make. There were many outstanding proposals and we did our best to judge based on fair and objective criteria, with special focus on overall value and on ability to deliver within the allotted timeframe.”
In addition to Elazar Harel, the selection committee included Maye Chrisman, associate chair for Finance & Administration in the School of Medicine; and Clay Johnston, director of the of UCSF’s Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI) and associate vice chancellor of research.

Winning teams will have seven weeks to complete their projects. An awards ceremony and showcase of the winning ideas will be part of the IT@UCSF Sharecase conference at the Mission Bay campus on October 12, 2012.
The IT Innovation Contest was managed using UCSF Open Proposals, a novel proposal mechanism designed to enable transparent and collaborative proposal development and promote multi-disciplinary team building. The Open Proposal tool was created by CTSI’s Virtual Home team.
