CTSI Stepping up its Support for Bench-to-Bedside (T1) Translational Research

Some recent developments:

June Lee, MD
will join CTSI as Director of T1 Programs.  Dr. Lee is a UCSF-trained pulmonologist, already UCSF clinical faculty, who comes to CTSI from Genentech where she led programs in early clinical development.  Dr. Lee will continue in her faculty role in the Department of Medicine and joins the CTSI Board of Directors.

The existing T1 Catalyst Program is yielding some early successes.  The program provides extensive consultation and financial support to investigators interested in developing new treatments or diagnostics. Teams from academia, industry, and venture capital are brought together to assist the faculty member in navigating intellectual property issues, commercialization potential, and in identifying partnerships and funding to move along promising discoveries.

CTSI is bolstering support for early phase clinical trials.  CTSI has a vigorous phase I clinical trials unit, currently focused on oncology under the leadership of Pamela Munster, but now ready to support early phase trials in all areas.  And, of course, CTSI continues to support all clinical studies in our seven other clinical research units.  Lynda Jacobsen is joining as Deputy Director of the CTSI Clinical Research Services and will help to shepherd expansion of the early phase trials unit as well as overall activities of the Clinical Research Services program.

CTSI offers new classes and degree programs in translational medicine.  The Master’s of Translational Medicine program, a UC Berkeley-UCSF partnership, is in full swing, with a highly qualified second class now enrolled.  The Graduate Education in Medical Sciences program is also thriving.
