Frequently Asked Questions

1. I already cited my own grant as the primary funding source. Can I also cite the support I received from CTSI?
  • Yes, it is okay to credit multiple sources of support. Please use the following grant citation language: "This publication [or project] was supported by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, National Institutes of Health, through UCSF-CTSI Grant Number ###. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of the NIH."
Replace the Grant Number placeholder ### as noted at the top of the page.
2. I have several co-authors on my publication. How can I delineate that these services were used to support only a portion of the work?
  • If you have multiple co-authors, only some of whom were supported by CTSI:

"Dr. A and Dr. B’s effort was supported by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, National Institutes of Health, through UCSF-CTSI Grant Number ###. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of the NIH." Replace the Grant Number placeholder ### as noted at the top of the page.

  •  Alternately, you can say generally that part of the project was supported by CTSI:

"This publication [or project] was supported in part by the National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences, National Institutes of Health, through UCSF-CTSI Grant Number ###. Its contents are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of the NIH." Replace the Grant Number placeholder ### as noted at the top of the page.

3. Where do I include the citation in my poster presentation?
  • A poster template which includes a CTSI acknowledgement is available here.
4. Why should I credit the CTSI grant?
  • Per NIH guidelines, all projects and publications supported by CTSI resources must cite our grant. Proper grant citation also helps CTSI demonstrate impact to our funding agency and may help with future funding opportunities to allow us to continue providing services to UCSF investigators.
5. I paid for CTSI services. Do I still have to credit the CTSI grant?
  • Yes, CTSI services are heavily subsidized so investigators must cite the CTSI grant for all projects and publications resulting from the utilization of any CTSI resources. Please include a citation even if the services were utilized earlier in the project's development.
