Faculty Director, Community Engagement Clinical and Translational Science Institute

Scope of Work

Applications are sought from current UCSF Faculty (all schools) for the position of Faculty Director, Community Engagement (CE) of the Clinical and Translational Science Institute (CTSI). All academic ranks are encouraged to apply.

This is an internal UCSF search.

The Faculty Director is responsible for providing leadership, overall programmatic direction, and vision for the CTSI’s Community Engagement Program. The Faculty Director works with faculty, staff, the CTSI Community Advisory Board (CAB), and other advisory bodies and vested parties to develop resources, tools, and infrastructure for UCSF study teams and community partners to support respectful, bi-directional community-engaged research. The CE Faculty Director engages with community partners from around the Bay Area to design initiatives that support successful community-academic partnerships.

The Faculty Director, CE reports to CTSI Director, Vanessa Jacoby.

This is a part time 15% (up to NIH Cap) position.

The specific priorities of the Faculty Director will be determined by the incumbent in collaboration with the CTSI Director and staff leadership. General responsibilities will include the following:

  • Serve as key personnel on the NIH Clinical Translational Science Awards grant, including regular engagement with CTSI leadership and institutional and community partners in the development, direction, and evaluation of the CE Program and overall CTSI activities. Attend CTSI leadership, program meetings, and CTSI-wide events such as an annual retreat.
  • Work closely with the CE Program’s Associate Director, program staff, and the CTSI CAB to guide program activities.
    Co-lead, with the Associate Director, the CE team which includes several full-time and part-time staff and part-time faculty.
  • Coordinate the work of the CE Program with the activities of other CTSI programs and other units to synergize efforts and activities.
  • Work closely with CTSI administrative leadership and CE Associate Director to manage the program budget.
    Work with the CTSI evaluation team to identify and track appropriate metrics for ongoing assessment and reporting of CE accomplishments.
  • Develop additional priorities and activities as needed in collaboration with the CTSI Director and CTSI Multiple PIs, the CTSI CAB, the Associate Director, community partners, and/or other collaborators
  • Cultivate and maintain strong relationships with community partners, organizations, community clinics and other leaders to foster trust, collaboration, and bidirectional learning. 
  • Serve as a champion and advocate for community-engaged research within CTSI and across UCSF. 

Criteria for appointment:

  • Assistant, Associate or Full Professor rank.
  • Ladder Rank, In Residence, Clinical X, Health Sciences Clinical or Adjunct series appointment.
  • DNP, PhD, MD, DO, DDS, Pharm D, DPTSc, DSc, or equivalent.
  • Track record of success in developing and sustaining bi-directional community-academic research partnerships.
  • Track record of working collaboratively with faculty, staff, and community partners.
  • Experience with shared leadership (preferred).
  • Training in or experience with community-based participatory research (CBPR) and/or practice-based research in community clinics.
