New Director of the Clinical Research Center C. William Balke to Bring Deep Knowledge in Clinical & Translational Research Organization to CTSI and UCSF

Dr. C. William Balke's main responsibilities will include directing the CTSI CRC and serving on the Board of Directors of the CTSI. He will be in charge of a program that has grown to include 10 research units that serve 250 investigators and support 365 inpatient and outpatient protocols per year, with a budget of $14M per year.  Given his broad experience, Dr. Balke will be a phenomenal asset to the development and implementation of the UCSF CTSI and the CTSI Clinical Research Center. He completed medical school at Temple University, residency in internal medicine at Johns Hopkins University, fellowship in cardiology and electrophysiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a postdoctoral research fellowship in physiology at the University of Maryland. He subsequently was appointed to the faculty at the University of Maryland and eventually rose to full professor, held an endowed chair, and served as Chief of the Division of Cardiology. In 2005, Dr. Balke moved to the University of Kentucky to become Director of the Institute of Molecular Medicine and was subsequently appointed Senior Associate Dean for Research, Associate Provost for Clinical and Translational Science and Director of the Center for Clinical and Translational Science (CCTS) The University of Kentucky CCTS is a very large, multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional center similar to the UCSF CTSI, though still seeking support as a CTSA. As Director, Dr. Balke did a superb job, raising $172M over the past few years and organizing a Center that includes 6 health professional schools, multiple University of Kentucky colleges, the University of Kentucky Medical Center, regional hospitals, rural health centers, and multiple local and state government agencies.
