The pillars of academia—its policies, practices, and structures—were established centuries ago and have changed very little and very slowly. University faculty members, particularly those in biomedicine, are often fiercely independent and creative, and academia has grown up to support these free agents. However, the pillars of academia may not be optimal for advancing knowledge and improving health as larger and more diverse teams with more sophisticated tools are required. Where are the opportunities to optimize academic potential?
